European Art (Arte Europeo)

We can offer the following paintings:

1) Andre del Sarto (Vannucchi, dit )

Biography: (Andrea d'Agnolo di Francesco di Luca di Paolo del Migliore, Gualfonda, Florence, 1487 - Florence, 1531), a Renaissance painter.
This celebrated painter of the Florentine school was born in 1487 (or perhaps 1486), by Agnolo, a tailor (sarto), hence the surname. There were four other children. The family, though of no distinction, can be traced back into the 14th century.
Since 1677 he has been constantly attributed the surname Vannucchi -according to some modern writers without any authority. The true name was the long one above recalled, following one of the Florentine naming conventions.

2) Gerrit (Gerard de la Note) Honthorst

Biography: Dutch painter (byname Gherardo della Notte), a leading member of the Utrecht school influenced by the Italian painter Caravaggio. Like his slightly older contemporary Hendrik Terbrugghen, Honthorst first studied under Abraham Bloemaert in Utrecht. In about 1610 he moved to Italy, where he had leading nobles as patrons and assimilated Caravaggio's realism and dramatic use of artificial light into a personal idiom. Notable works of his Italian sojourn include The Beheading of St John the Baptist (S. Maria delle Scala, Rome), Christ Before the High Priest (c. 1617, National Gallery, London), and the Supper Party (1620, Uffizi, Florence), all nocturnal scenes. Returning to the Netherlands in 1620, Honthorst stayed in Utrecht until 1627, the year of Rubens' visit to his home. He was dean of the Utrecht Guild of St. Luke in 1625-26, and in 1628 he worked at the court of Charles I in London. The rest of his life was spent primarily in The Hague and, after 1652, at Utrecht. Although Honthorst accepted commissions for decorative cycles and painted at least one illusionistic ceiling, his most significant contribution to Dutch painting was his joint leadership, with Terbrugghen, of the Utrecht followers of Caravaggio. Rembrandt's use of Caravaggesque devices in his early works derives in large part from his knowledge of Honthorst's paintings. Honthorst's brother Willem van Honthorst (1594-1666), who was also an accomplished painter, sometimes worked with him

3) Jacopo Robusti ( Il Tintoretto ), or attributed to, 1518-1594

Biography: His father was a dyer by trade, was born in Venice. Tintoretto, who studied for a short time with Titian and then with Schiavone, admired the color of Titian and the drawing of Michelangelo. Tintoretto's intention was to combine color and drawing to create a new form of art. His personal, dramatic and imaginative painting was to become increasingly Mannerist in style as it grew more and more fluid through the years. He painted portraits, classical or mythological works, and religious canvases using Old Testament themes and subjects. His portraits are restrained and intimate, and glowing with color. His classical works are distinguished by their grace and by the dramatic elements in his poetic conceptions

4) Georg Philipp Rugendas der Ältere

Biography: (Augsburg 1802 - Weilheim a.d. Teck 1858) Johann Moritz Rugendas was born in Augsburg on 29 March 1802. His father, an artist who also managed the Art School, was his teacher in his early years. In 1814 Rugendas, who was enterprising even in early adolescence, went to Munich to study further under Albrecht Adam. In 1817 Rugendas enrolled at the Munich Art Academy, where his principal teacher was Lorenz Quaglio. Finding academic training unsatisfying, Rugendas was drawn to painting landscape, horses and working from nature. In 1821 Rugendas, only nineteen years old, took advantage of the opportunity afforded by the Russian Consul-General in Brazil, Freiherr von Langsdorff, to travel to South America and explore the jungle. In the course of the expedition, however, Rugendas dissolved his contract with Langsdorff in order to study the country, its flora and fauna and inhabitants, on his own.

5) Leon Augustin Lhermitte ***SOLD***

Biography: (b mont saint-père, aisne, 31 july 1844; d paris, 27 july 1925). French draughtsman, printmaker, painter and illustrator. He was the only son of a village schoolmaster and his precocious drawing skill won him an annual grant from the state. In 1863 he went to Paris and became a student at The Petite Ecole, where one of his teachers was Horace Lecoq de Boisbaudran, famed for his method of training the visual memory. Jean-Charles Cazin, a fellow pupil, became a lifelong friend and Lhermitte later got to know Alphonse Legros, Henri Fantin-Latour, Jules Dalou and Rodin, who had all studied at the school. In 1864 his charcoal drawing The Banks of the Marne near Alfort (untraced) was exhibited at the salon. By inclination and by training as a meticulous draughtsman, he continued to exhibit his drawings at the salon until 1889.

6) Theobal Michau:

Oil on panel

Sized with frame: 37 x 29

Biography: flemish painter. in 1686 he was a pupil of Lucas Achtschellinck (1626–99) in Brussels, where he became a master in 1698. from 1710 he was an independent master in the guild of St Luke in Antwerp. most of his paintings are small-scale cabinet pictures, some on copper. they depict landscapes, river views, scenes of winter, markets and villages, peopled with tiny figures strolling or working, sometimes celebrating or drinking, often dressed in blue or red and accompanied by a few animals. typical examples include landscape with a group of farmers (valenciennes, mus. b.-a.), landscape (brunswick, herzog anton ulrich-mus.) and landscape with figures (antwerp, kon. mus. s. kst.). Michau’s anecdotal scenes continue the 17th-century tradition of genre paintings by jan breughel the elder, david teniers the younger and pieter bout. his use of colour is indebted to breughel but lacks the same strength, and the stocky figures seem inspired by teniers. in comparison with these masters, however, michau seems a mere 18th-century imitator who did not manage to contribute many original variations. yet he was successful in his day; engravings of several of his works were made by jacques-philippe lebas and his pupils, and jacques d’arthois asked him to paint the figures in some landscapes. Charles, 4th duke of Lorraine (d 1780), then governor of the southern Netherlands, bought ten of his works.

7) Jacques Francois Joseph Swebach-Desfontaines

Oil on panel

Sized with frame: 53 cm x 42 cm

Biography
: (1769-1823) After studying with his father, the painter and sculptor François Swebach, the young Jacques-Francois Swebach settled in Paris. He began exhibiting at the Salon in 1791, and soon gained a reputation for his paintings and drawings of horses and military scenes. Described by one critic as the ‘Wouwerman of our time’, Swebach was appointed premier peintre at the Manufacture de Sèvres, a post he held from 1802 to 1813. One of his most important projects at the Sèvres factory was the translation of the designs of Egyptian scenes by Baron Vivant Denon, made during Napoleon’s campaigns in Egypt, onto two superb dessert services, one of which was presented to the Czar of Russia, Alexander I. It was Swebach's fame as a designer that led the Czar to summon him to Russia, and between 1815 and 1820 he worked in Saint Petersburg as the chief painter of the Imperial porcelain works. However, he continued to send small cabinet pictures back to Paris to be exhibited at the Salons. These made up a large part of his painted output, and Swebach’s paintings of horse fairs, markets, battle and hunting scenes were acquired by a large and enthusiastic group of private collectors. He also produced a large number of engravings, and in 1806 published his Encyclopédie pittoresque, a series of lithographs of horses. Paintings by Swebach are in a number of public collections in France, including the Musées des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and Marseille, and the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse.
